PAPER AND PAPER BAG PRODUCTION IN TURKEY
Paper production, assumed to be an indicator in development levels of countries, has reflected a steady increase in Turkey - except in crisis periods. Paper consumption in Turkey per person was 63.7 kg in 2007 and 59.5 kg in 2008. According to the data of 2007, Turkey was holding the 17th place in paper consumption in the world and at the 52nd row in paper consumption per person.
The paper sector in Turkey today has 3.5 million tons of production capacity. In the 2007 world paper production listings Turkey was 25th in paper production, 17th in consumption. These figures show us that Turkey is a paper importing country.
Paper bag usage in Turkey is limited mainly with cement, lime, mining and construction chemicals. In European countries and USA, paper bag usage in food sector is very common. Another important issue in packing is related with the weights of the bags. Bags in Turkey are used for 50 kg. Whereas in the developed countries the bags are generally 25 kg. This standard that has been put into practice by some factories shall result in doubling the existing market provided that the application shall spread nationwide.
The total bag production capacity of our country is 1.2 billion pieces. Unfortunately, half of this capacity is inactive, waiting for orders.
